About Art Therapy

Art therapy, also called Art Psychotherapy, is a form of psychotherapy that uses creativity and art‑making to support emotional expression, wellbeing, and self‑understanding. You don’t need any artistic experience as the focus is on exploration and expression, not producing a ‘finished’ piece.
Using materials like paint, clay, pencils, collage, or sensory objects, art therapy can help express things that are hard to put into words. It can support anxiety, overwhelm, bereavement, trauma, identity, confidence, and neurodivergent experiences.
You choose the pace, the materials, and the way you engage.
Art therapy can help with:
-
Anxiety, stress, or emotional overwhelm
-
Bereavement, loss, or family changes
-
Trauma or adverse childhood experiences
-
Difficulties with emotional regulation
-
Low confidence or self‑esteem
-
School‑based challenges (attendance, friendships, transitions)
-
Neurodivergent experiences (ASC, ADHD, sensory needs)
Art‑making offers a non‑verbal route into expression and regulation, which can be particularly helpful for those who may find talking therapies overwhelming or inaccessible.
What happens in a session?
Sessions take place in a calm, comfortable room with a range of creative materials available. You choose what you’d like to use or whether you’d like to make art at all. There’s no right or wrong way to create. Some people talk while they create, while others prefer to work quietly and reflect together afterwards. There is no right or wrong way to engage as the process is shaped around what feels most comfortable and supportive for you, which we work out together.
A typical session includes:
-
A gentle check‑in
-
Time to explore materials, talk, or create
-
Space to reflect together if you’d like
-
A predictable ending so you feel grounded before leaving
Accessibility: The therapy space is quiet, calm, and sensory‑aware. Please get in touch if you have specific sensory or access needs, I’m happy to adapt where possible.
